Water is at the base of the ruminant food pyramid.
Milk is 87-88% water, which also accounts for 80% of a cow’s total intake.
This water intake can be used to help meet energy needs when, for physiological and/or environmental reasons, dry matter intake decreases, such as around calving and during the summer.
